The Crimean crisis is an international
crisis principally
involving Russia and
Ukraine. Ukrainian
President Viktor Yanukovych's decision last November to pull out of an
association deal with the EU sparked huge street protests which eventually led to his downfall.
Most developments apply to the Crimean
Peninsula, formerly region of Ukraine composed of the Autonomous Republic of
Crimea and separate municipality of Sevastopol; both are populated by an ethnic
Russian majority and a minority of both ethnic Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars.
Moscow (AFP) - Russia has refused to budge from
its seemingly imminent annexation of Crimea, defying Western pressure at the UN
Security Council, as Ukraine's ousted president prepared to make his first
public appearance.
When President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty
annexing Crimea to great fanfare in the Kremlin and anger in the West, a
trusted lieutenant was making his way to Asia to shore up ties with Russia's
eastern allies. Putin has been warning the U.S. and other North Atlantic Treaty
Organization states for at least six years not to impede Russian interests in Ukraine,
particularly in Crimea.
US President Barack Obama and his European
allies are urging Russia to call its troops in Crimea back to their barracks
and launch immediate negotiations with the new Ukrainian leadership, which
Putin claims took power in an "unconstitutional coup". Obama also
threatened to target major sectors of the economy if Russia moved on areas of
Ukraine beyond the Black Sea peninsula.
Poland has decided to speed
up its tender for a missile defense system, the Defence Ministry said, in a
sign of Warsaw's disquiet over the tension between neighboring Ukraine and
Russia. Poland has played a key part in brokering a peace deal between the
Government and opposition in Kiev, and then driven the West's response when the
agreement fell apart and Russia seized the strategic Ukrainian peninsula of
Crimea.
Last events in Kiev are
fearful - since 22 years Ukraine as an independent state have not experience
such a violence.
